County To Hire Finance Officer
The
BOC heard from interim manager Leonard Myers at the 9/19/05
meeting. He recommended that the County hire a CFO. Mr. Myers told
the commissioners the right person would pay for himself by proper
management of county funds. He gave an example of the billable
hours the CPA will be charging to get the financial records in shape
in order to get the audit done. With a CFO that can actually handle
the finances of the County, the work would be done for the auditor
to review; he should not have to reconstruct the accounts as
has been done in the past few years enabling the auditor to charge
additional costs to the County. The finance committee has told the
BOC repeatedly that the financial statements were not correct and
there were numerous posting errors. Mr. Myers backed up these
statements when he said, “The documents are ineffective” meaning
the financial statements are not giving the BOC or the
Departments information they need. It is our understanding
the BOC hopes to have someone in place within a few weeks. All 5
Commissioners voted FOR this new position. The TWG concurs—this is
a good idea that Mr. Myers has presented. The BOC has been
operating in the dark for the last 8 months and has no idea where
they actually stand financially at this time.
