JASPER
COUNTY VOTING DISTRICTS
Citizens in Jasper County are becoming more vocal about
the “layout” of the voting districts.
District 1 and District 2 are the classic example of “gerrymandering.”
District 3 seems to be composed of what is left over that
the other districts didn’t want. All districts have “fingers”
into other districts. The best place to view the voting
district map is in the Registrar’s office. There is no map
“online.”
Here
are the statistics on the Voting Districts in Jasper County:
As of June 1,
2007, Jasper County has 7,465 registered voters with 6,626
of those being active voters and
839 as inactive voters. To
be legally correct each district should have 1,493 voters.
District
5,
which is represented by School Board member Joy Wild and
County Commissioner Robert Yarbrough, has 1,209
active voters.
District
4, which is represented by School Board
member Paul Kelly and County Commissioner Greg Johnson,
has 1,521 active voters.
District
3,
which is represented by School Board member Joel Gaston
and County Commissioner Jack Bernard, has 1,871
active voters.
District
2,
which is represented by School Board member Phyllis Norwood
and County Commissioner Charles Hill, has 999
active voters.
District
1,
which is represented by School Board member Bobby Norris
and County Commissioner Carl Pennamon, has 1,026
active voters.
Population growth
in Districts 3 and 4 has increased the size of these two
districts to be more than the other 3 districts combined.

Active voters
by race as of June 1, 2007 are:
• 1387 Black
or 21% of active voters
• 5159 White or 78% of active voters
• 80 Other or 1% of active voters.
During
the next census, the districts will have to be realigned
to make them more equal.
If the Commissioners and School Board cannot come up with
a re-apportionment plan, the courts will draw the lines.
